School Values: Promotes Belief Creates Success

Year 5B

Class of 2019 - 20

February 2020

In February, we have had a very exciting month! We have plunged even further into our topic ‘Sun, Sweets and Sacrifice’. We have found out about a civilisation (Mayan Civilisation) that occurred in America during the time of 2000BC-1500AD. We explored their religion, beliefs and how and why they sacrificed. We have explored the purpose of a Mayan mask and why they used them. We found out that the Mayans used the masks within festivals or to ward off evil spirits. In DT, we will be creating our very own Mayan mask; we will have the option between wearing the mask for a celebration or to ward off spirits! We can’t wait!

In PE, we have been excellent gymnasts! We began our gymnastics topic learning how to complete a cartwheel and forward roll; we were very successful! Then, we created balances with our partners (as you can see from our photos, we are very strong!). After learning some gymnastics skills, we put them all together into our very own routine. Miss Cotter thinks we are definitely ready for the Olympics!

We can’t wait to carry on learning!

January 2020

During January, we have been super busy! We started our new topic 'Sun, Sweets and Sacrifice' with an American day. We enjoyed an American banquet with a variety of American food and drink. Also, we were lucky enough to take part in American sports by learning a cheerleading dance. Since our American day, we have gained knowledge in the Geography of America, looking at where the country is in the world, its topographical features and the economy. In February,  we will begin to look at the civilisation that occurred in America many, many years ago. In English, we have reported on a blizzard that occurred in New York City. We explored synonyms for blizzard and focused on speech to convey different characters (formal and informal characters). In Maths, we have explored division and looked at which method is the most efficient.

We can't wait to continue our learning throughout February!

December 2019

During December, we have been busy in Year 5! In English, we looked at wintery settings and wrote poems which were inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's poem (Winter Time). As part of our Christmas pathway, we made calendars for the new year based around the seasons and we created Christmas cards for our families based around the theme of our poem. As a class, we made two Christmas wreaths. We worked as a team in order to create the best wreath! We had lots of fun at our Christmas party and we are looking forward to getting back to school in the new year!

November 2019

In English, we have been writing about our dream jobs. We began the topic with mock interviews and answered questions around what our personal qualities are, what skills are needed for the job and why we would be a perfect candidate for the job.

In Art, we have continued using charcoal to explore shape and line within silhouettes. We have been practising different skills in order to eventually complete our final art piece.
To end a wonderful November, we took a trip to Astley Mining Museum and we had so much fun! We explored all the machines that were used to power the mines, we got close up to the pit head and we even dressed up as a mining family and experienced how they lived. Also, we found out that the Astley mine was as deep as the height of 5 Blackpool towers. We met a miner that had worked at the Astley mine from the age of 14 and he told us lots of interesting facts!

October 2019
We have had a very busy October! During English, we have been creating our own instructions for a potion of our choice. Some of us decided to create a potion to turn our teachers into frogs and others created potions to make their pets fly!

In Maths, we have continued with place value and since half term, we have moved onto exploring addition.

During our Science lessons, we have been exploring air resistance. We had to plan and create a parachute to prevent the egg from cracking when dropped at a great height. We worked as a team to create the best parachute! Unfortunately, some of our eggs cracked.

To begin our fair trade topic, in Geography, we explored where different fruits came from and what conditions they needed in order to grow. We found out that some fruits needed tropics conditions whereas others needed damp conditions.
We were lucky enough to take part in Race For Life! Before we ran, we created our very own Race For Life sign for people who may have been affected.
Finally, to end a wonderful month of learning, we took park in the Upper Phase Halloween Enrichment. We took park in several activities such as potion making, fortune telling, poem writing, skeleton making and Halloween hunting! We had so much fun!
September 2019
We have started the new academic year learning all about our topic "What makes our community smile?" We began with a walk around the community focusing on what the land is used for. We identified that throughout Platt Bridge, the land is used for commerical, recreational, residential and abandoned purposes. Whilst on our community walk, we visited St Nathanial's church and learned all about the role of the church in the community. During our History lessons, we have began looking at the mining strike learning all about Margaret Thatcher and Arthur Scargill and their role in the strike.
In English, we designed our own mythical create and we are currently writing a non-chronological report about it.
We can't wait to continue learning throughout October!

1

Class of 2018 - 19

June 2019

During the month of June, we have continued learning all about America. In History, we have learned all about the Mayans and how they lived their lives. We focused on the hierarchy and discussed how the views on hierarchies have changed over the years. Additionally, we have learned all about the traditional American dances and we were lucky enough to take part in an American carnival dance and an American cheerleading session. We performed our routines to the rest of the school!
In English, we created our own poems all about Harry Potter and the houses (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw). After we created our poems, we performed them to Year 1.
In Maths, we have been focusing on measure. We have converted and compared different forms of measure.

May 2019

May has been an exciting month for Year 5. We have loved finding out about the Geography of America. We have enjoyed looking at the physical and human features of Yellowstone National Park in America and we have compared those features with the Lake District.
In our indoor PE session, we have loved working in pairs whilst balancing one another. The skills that are needed during these sessions are teamwork, balance and trust!
In Maths, we explored 3D shape and their properties. We enjoyed exploring 3D nets and making our own shapes!

April 2019
In Year 5, we have had fun exploring our new topic ‘Is America the land of the free?’ We started the term with an American banquet where we ate hotdogs, popcorn, crisps and drank milkshake. We have been exploring the countries and capital cites within North and South America whilst looking at the human and physical features.
In maths, we have been exploring the area and perimetre of different shapes, and in English we have been writing our own descriptive instructions potions.
We can’t wait to continue our learning through to May!

March 2019

Year 5 have been finding out about the battles that occurred in Ancient Greece. We found out all about the Peloponnesian War, and we created our very own interview scripts to perform in front of a green screen. After half term, we will perform our interviews whilst being recorded and then edit them using the app.

In English, we have written a persuasive leaflet to encourage children to come to our school and experience all of the amazing opportunities that we have to offer. We then wrote a formal letter to inform the community about a witch that had escaped from witch school.

In PE, we have focused on netball. We have worked on throwing and catching, pivoting and shooting. On the last day of term we will be putting our skills into practice during a Y5 netball tournament. We can't wait!!

February 2019

Y5 have been busy finding out about Ancient Greece and their interests. We found out that pottery was really popular in Ancient Greece, so we designed and made our very own Greek pots! We all had a purpose for our pots which was to store liquid, fruit, and pens. In English, we looked at mythological stories to give us inspiration around creating our own. Before we wrote our stories, we acted them out whilst the audience guessed the characters. We had so much fun! In maths, we have been exploring adding and subtracting fractions, and we will soon be putting our knowledge of fractions into decimals. In PE, we have been focusing on our dodge ball skills. To put our skills into practice, we had a tournament against 5A, and 5B won!! We can’t wait to carry on our learning through March!

January 2019

Year 5 have started the New Year with an introduction to our new topic ‘Who Were the Ancient Greeks?’

On the first day back after the holidays, we had lots of Greek activities, and we tasted Greek foods: feta cheese, olives, Greek yoghurt, meatballs, houmous and pita bread.

We were lucky enough to have a visit from an Ancient Spartan and Athenian named Andreas and Penelope. They gave us lots of information about life in Ancient Sparta and Ancient Athens. We dressed up in Ancient Greek outfits, played Ancient Greek games, looked at Ancient Greek items and even learned some Ancient Greek dance routines!

At the end of the workshop, we had to decide if would prefer to live in Ancient Sparta (where they are known to be great soldiers) or Ancient Athens (where there are lots of theatres, markets and schools). We had so much fun, and we can’t wait to find out more!

In Science, we have completed our Earth, Space and Moon topic by creating our very own solar system! We painted them and used our knowledge to order them correctly.

December 2018

We have had a festive December in Year 5! As a class we created our very own Christmas Wreath to put on our classroom door. We have made Christmas cards, calendars and Christmas crackers. We had a busy period preparing for our school Christmas markets. We made a tree decoration using lollipop sticks, string and decorative items. We sold all of our products! We were very lucky to watch the KS1 nativity ‘It’s Christmas!’

For our topic homework we had to create a sculpture, a poster or a leaflet to reflect what the community means to us.

Finally, Year 5 would like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you in 2019.

November 2018

Year 5 have been busy in November. In English, we have wrote about inspirational women and the effect they have had on us today. We then wrote about a crime scene that took place in 5A. The classroom was vandalised so it was our job to work out who the victims were. In maths, we have been focusing on multiplication and making a start on division. In Art/ PSHE we discussed Remembrance Day, and we made a solider from the war out of poppies to show our respect.

October 2018

We have had an extremely busy October in 5B. In English, we have produced a piece of descriptive writing as life as a window on New Years Eve, in New York City and at a park during the day and night. During our Math lessons, we have continued to focus on subtraction whilst making a start on multiplication. We have been investigating the effects of water resistance in Science. To do this we designed and created our own boats to test on water.

During the last week of half term, we were lucky enough to take part in the Doctor Dolittle day along with the rest of the school. We had a fun packed day where we took part in several wonderful activities such as holding critters, a puppet show, a talk about Knowsley safari animals and visits from dogs trust and the farm. At the end of the day we performed our song, I just can’t wait to be king, to the whole school!

September 2018

We have had a fun and busy September in 5B! We began our community topic by enjoying a walk around Platt Bridge. This walk allowed us to begin exploring the community and it allowed us to create ideas about how we would like to use the abandoned land around Platt Bridge. In English, we have created our own settings in order to describe them. We have looked at non-chronological reports about our own dinosaurs. In Maths, we have been focusing on place value, addition and subtraction with numbers up to one million, including negative numbers and decimals. In Science, we have been looking at forces and we have investigated which type of material would be the best to use for a brake on a bike.

In the next few weeks we will be continuing to explore forces, subtraction and we will be starting a balanced argument.

Miss Cotter, 5B

September 2018

Welcome to class 5B! We hope you have all had a fantastic summer and a well deserved rest. We can’t wait to start the new academic year with you learning all about our new topic “What makes a community smile?”. We will be looking at our community in the past and present.

Class of 2017 - 18

May 2018

In English, we wrote about a battle that commenced in Times Square, New York between the amazing Spiderman and Electro (Max). We watched the video and retold the events from different perspectives. It was action packed so we were able to use all sorts of grammar features! We then moved onto a poetry piece of work where we created our very own monsters. We drew them and thought about its’ characteristics, appearance and personality. This was really fun and gave us lots of information to base our poem on. Using this, we started to write our narrative poems and think about different poetic techniques we could use. We had to make sure that we used rhyming words and we counted the syllables to make sure it had a good rhythm. In science,we learned about pulleys and levers. Levers work by reducing the amount of force needed to move/lift an object. A lever is a simple machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge. To test this, we built our own levers and moved the pivot point, also known as a fulcrum, to see how it affected lifting an object. This was a fantastic experiment that we all really enjoyed. We found out that the closer the object is to the fulcrum, the easier it is to lift. Fascinating! Finally, in thematic, we looked at locating the different states on a map by using 6 figure grid references. This was really interesting and we tested our partners to see if they knew which state we wanted them to look at.

April 2018

In April, we started to learn about fractions. This involved looking at proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, finding fractions of amounts and converting fractions into decimals and percentages. We did lots of fun activities with fractions! In thematic, we started our new topic, ‘What is the Land of the Free?’ Do you know what the Land of the Free is? It is all about America and in our first lesson we did lots of research to find fun facts about the country. The 50 stars on the American flag represent all of the different states. We then looked at the Geography of the different countries in North and South America by identifying countries on a map using an atlas. This was really fun and interesting! Once this was finished, we looked closer at the different states in America and looked at each city state in detail by looking at the flag and more information e.g. population and famous landmarks. We linked our thematic work into our computing lessons by creating a quiz on ‘Scratch’ to be answered by our friends. John (the computing man) helped us through the different stages of this and we created our very own character as well.

March 2018

In English in March, we produced a piece of writing about  different superheroes. Every person picked  a different superhero to talk and write about. We gathered lots of information about our chosen superheroes and expanded on these points. This was a really fun topic to write about and everybody loved finding out more information about other people’s superheroes! It was very interesting! In maths, we started to look at fractions. We did lots of fun activities (using concrete apparatus) to help us understand how fractions work. In science, we looked at the fascinating topic, friction. Friction is the resistance of motion when one object rubs against another object. We completed an experiment to see which material would be the best for a shoe sole. We investigated which material under the shoe went down the fastest. We tested tin foil, tissue, plastic and a cloth. We found out that the material with the least amount of friction was the plastic bag because it took less time to go down the ramp. We wrote down the time it took and wrote a paragraph on which took the most time and which object took the least time. This was amazing!!

February 2018

During February, in math, we learned about division. We were working out how to solve the question by using the bus stop method. In math, we also did a reasoning quiz based column addition, column subtraction, times tables, division and multiplying. These problems were all based on real life scenarios. In thematic, we learned how to play a famous Greek game called Petteia and played a game with other children. We learnt this when a Greek man and woman came to visit us in school and told us all about the Ancient Greeks, We also learned about the Ancient Greek Olympics. We found out lots of information about the Ancient Greek Olympics. This included looking at what sports were involved. Did you know that only men could compete in the Ancient Greek Olympics? We then compared them with the Modern Day Olympics and some things are very similar but other things are quite different. Athletes nowadays wear official sportswear rather than competing naked!

January 2018

Maths - In Maths, in January, we have looked at division. We did this by using the bus stop method. We then looked at a number of division word problems.

English - In English, we learned about Mr Popper’s Penguins and wrote questions that our partner answered. Next, we did Winter Wonderland reflections and it was all about our winter wonderland day that we had on Friday 12th December. It was lots of fun. We had a number of different activities including fake snow, face painting, real reindeers, ice rink and many more awesome activities.

Topic – In topic, we learned about Ancient Greece and we wrote many facts about them and then wrote them all up in a paragraph. We stuck in some Greek pots and then wrote the story that was on the pot. We also ordered events in chronological order from 146 BC to 650 BC. Two people came in and talked to us about Ancient Greece and we made coins out of clay, dressed up and looked at some Greek things.

Science – In science, we did air resistance and we made parachutes to see which parachute took the longest to get down. We made a prediction and then seen whose parachute took longest to get down and we saw that the biggest parachute took the longest to get down. We also learned about gravity and how it pulls objects down to the floor. We got some objects and weighed them with a newton meter so then we knew the weight of the objects.

December 2017

In English, we studied Bolivia and wrote paragraphs about it using many different grammatical skills. We used topic sentences to start our paragraphs because it was a non-fiction piece. We also looked at Monty the Penguin from the 2014 John Lewis Christmas advert. We wrote a diary entry on the events in order.

We finished off prime numbers and we moved on to multiplication.

In Topic, we looked at the order of how Fairtrade bananas get into local shops. We glued down pictures and wrote what the picture was all about.

In Science, we did about solid liquid and gases. We drew lines to a picture, solid, liquid, gas and explanation of the picture. We also wrote facts  down about the 3 phases and placed then in a table which subtitles were solid, liquid and gas.

November 2017

In November, in English, we did a description about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Willy Wonka’s chocolate room. We described what we could taste, smell, feel, see and hear using different grammatical skills. We also looked at Harry Potter and the Polyjuice potion where we could change into another person. Finally, we looked at the country Bolivia. This was really interesting and we found out lots of information about this wonderful place.

In maths, we have studied addition, subtraction, common multiples, lowest common multiples, prime numbers, composite numbers and factors. It has been good to look at so many different things. Do you know that a prime number is a number that can only be divided by 1 and itself?

We studied all about light and how do we see. Another thing we did was listing light sources and putting them in a table. We also made a periscope and explained how it works. This was really fun!

In Topic, we have been focusing a lot on coal mining in Wigan and our local community. We also looked at primary and secondary sources and used them to decide whether sources were facts or opinions. We went to the Wigan Life Museum to learn more about coal mining in Wigan. It was a great trip and we learnt lots of fascinating things. We finished coal mining and moved onto Fairtrade.

We went to Rose Bridge to watch Bugsy Malone which was performed by the Year 11 students and it was a fantastic experience.

October 2017

In English, we made our own Pokémon. We decided what it would look like, the name, pokedex number, type, height, weight, ability, skills, base stats and speed. Then we wrote a character description about it. Another English topic that we wrote about was retelling the main events of a short film where a boy gets a puppy but doesn’t like it because it only had three legs. A very exciting topic was when we described the chocolate room from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We did a chocolate tasting session and then wrote about what the tasty looking chocolate room. We used relative clauses, subordinate clauses and expanded noun phrases.

In Science, we concentrated on earth and space. We did the phases of the moon, seasons, revolution and rotation. We also looked at lots of planet fact files. This was extremely interesting!

In Math, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction. Also we have used the column method to solve 3-6 digit problems.

In Topic, we did an evaluation about our maasai masks that we made. We’ve moved onto the topic coal mining where we will learn about the coal mining industry in Wigan.

September 2017

In September, we’ve had a visit from the emergency services that told us about their roles and responsibilities. We have also been introduced to Spanish by a Spanish teacher from Rose Bridge Academy. The Spanish teacher taught us how to ask a person their name and answer them. In Science, we are learning about Earth and Space. We have learned about revolution, rotation, day, night and seasons. In English, we written a time travel piece where we went back to the Jurassic Era. This was really interesting! In Topic, we are learning about the Maasai tribe and their masks. Finally, we are  creating a Minecraft world for a building we would like to see in Platt Bridge.

September 2017

Welcome back to the children of 5B. Mrs Abel and I hope you have had a great summer holidays and have had lots of fun!!

During our first week back, 5B will be taking a look at lots of new and exciting topics including looking at the emergency services. We are going to be visited by the Fire Brigade and Paramedics for a talk to tell us information about how they help our community. Get your questions at the ready.

In maths and English, we have some extremely fun and exciting lessons in store for you. Our focus in maths will be place value for the first half term.

In our topic this year, we will be focusing on communities all around the world. We will be looking closely at a tribe based in Kenya and Tanzania called the Maasai tribe. We will be researching all about them and finding out lots of interesting information. Our research will help us compare and understand how their community is different to ours. The children will be given the chance to make their very own Maasai masks.

In Science, we will be looking at earth and space for the first term. This will include researching about different planets in our solar system including the sun, earth and moon. We are very excited to learn about earth and space as it is extremely interesting!!

We will also be doing gymnastics in P.E which will include learning about different skills such as balancing, travelling, jumping, fluency and co-ordination.

Class of 2016 -17

May 2017

We did many things. In maths, we learnt about line graphs, interpreting data and translation which was very interesting. In science, we looked at plants (the life cycle of a plant and pollination). In topic, we have been focusing on America. We compared Yellowstone National Park and Snowdonia National Park (they are very different!) We also looked at coordinates and plotting famous landmarks on a map. As part of Eco-Week, we have been creating and designing upcycled playground games. ‘Upcycling’ means creating new products, using old products. We have made a target game from an old bed sheet. It looks amazing! We also went on a nature walk and sketched different things that we saw. In English, we have written a piece of writing about the Spiderman movie, then a piece about New York and then we wrote about the King Kong movie (Skull Island). We went on an amazing trip to Liverpool John Moores University and took part in some lessons like media and history. We all want to go to this university!

Macey

April 2017

In English, we wrote about a rollercoaster ride (Green Lantern). Also, we started to collect ideas for a Spiderman piece which was really good. In science, we learnt about water resistance. We created different shapes out of play dough and tested if the surface area affected the water resistance. We found out that the bigger the surface area of an object, the bigger the force.  In topic, we started planning our comparison writing between Snowdonia and Yellowstone Nation Park.  In maths, we learnt about area, volume, converting measure and converting grams and kilograms.

Rebecca

March 2017

In maths, we looked at rounding decimals, decimal problems, fractions and percentages. In topic, we looked at Ancient Greek pots and looked at how we could make our own modern day pots. After we had designed them, we made them which was really fun. In science, we looked pulleys, levers and gears. We created our own pulley and lever systems. In English, we saw a real life dinosaur! Using information that we collected, we made instructions to make your own dinosaur trap. We also did a writing piece about a dinosaur and the life of a raptor.

Siah

February 2017
In February, we have done lots of wonderful things.
In English, we wrote to persuade Mr Pugh to give us a full day of golden time. We were really excited about writing this because it we needed to show him that we are the best class! In School of Military, we have been looking at healthy eating and we even made smoothies which tasted amazing. In science, we learnt about gravity and to learn about this we completed an ‘eggs’periment. We learnt that gravity pulls us to the ground. We all really enjoyed doing this and it also tested our team work skills because we worked in pairs. Also, in science we did reversible and irreversible changes. We found out that freezing and melting ice lollies shows a reversible changes. I found out a lot of information out about the Ancient Greek Olympics in topic. Did you know they started in 776BC (2,700 years ago)?  It was very interesting, fun and fascinating to learn about the Greek Olympics. Only men were allowed to compete. Shocking! When it was e-safety week, we had a visitor in to talk to us all about keeping safe on the internet. We then made posters and entered them into a competition. Some of the amazing posters will be displayed around the whole school. That was extremely fun!
Siah

E-Safety Day

As a WOW launch to E Safety day we wanted to do something memorable for the children around keeping children safe on the Internet. With the help of One Day Creative, all the children in the school got to take part in a fun creative workshop and learn all about E Safety through Drama.

Year 4-5 explored E safety issues the same way but through a super heroes and villains theme. Some children were in charge of E- safety and had to Buzz and shout “Stop” when there was something suspicious or unsafe happening in the game. The foam numbers and letters represented the keyboard on the game and the children acted out behind these as though in the game.

January 2017

In Science we used different things to separate different materials for a shop. This included separating materials like flour and raisins, rice and paper clips, sand and water. We also did an experiment to separate salt and water. Did you know that the water evaporates and the salt is left in the bowl? Amazing! For topic, we are learning all about Ancient Greece. When doing that, we had a special visitor come in who told us all about the Ancient Greeks! In English, we wrote about our favourite hobbies which was really exciting! Lots of people chose football, Minecraft and Pokémon. Interestingly, we have started some very exciting lessons where a man comes into our class to teach us about different life skills. They are called the School of Military. Amazingly, we went outside and did shelter building on the field. They threw water on them to check how well they were built.

December 2016

In December, we learned a lot of cool facts about snow leopards. In our English lesson we completed a piece of work containing all these interesting facts.

We also did lots of exciting things about super heroes. We used iPads to gain lots of different fact about our super heroes we selected. We chose our own super hero to design.

Near the Christmas holidays, we started to design our own calendars for 2017. It took a few days to finish them all, it was very fun and we enjoyed it. We also created our own Christmas cards for our family and friends which was also very fun. We looked at why light is important in different religions around the world for our topic. We learned that light is actually very important to us and can mean different things.

November 2016

Firstly, in math we have been learning about multiplication, grid method, compact method and times tables. We have played games and had competitions so that we can memorise them.
In English, we had a great time learning about and reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We looked at the different characters in the book and wrote a missing poster for Veruca Salt who vanished down the 'bad egg' chute.

Throughout November, we have been researching about Fairtrade and the trade links for our Fairtrade products. Last week, we specifically looked at bananas, and where and how they are grown, and then how they are transported to the United Kingdom. This was very interesting! Did you know that bananas are grown and kept in bags to ensure that they grow better?

In science, we have been learning about solubles, insolubles, transparency and conductivity. Next week, we're going to be looking at how thermal different materials are.

October 2016

Spaceport Trip

Today, Year 5 have been to Spaceport in Liverpool to learn more about the solar system. We had a great day and learnt lots of interesting facts about space.

We started our day in the interactive section of the museum and saw lots of models. They helped us see and understand how we get day and night and even how we get seasons. We loved these demonstrations and fun activities!

We then took a visit into the Space Dome where we found out lots of exciting facts about the different planets in our solar system. Did you know that Mars is very similar to planet Earth? Not long ago, scientists sent a machine up to planet Mars to investigate if there were signs of life.

After dinner, we were able to test gravity and magnetic fields in the ‘Feel the Force’ exhibit. We also saw visual tricks and explored the way light works in our hands. This included optical illusions that have to be seen to be believed! We had a great time in the ‘Gaming Zone’ where our knowledge was put to the test. Quite tricky!

Now to board the ‘Cosmic Coaster’. What a ride this was! This wild roller coaster ride took us for a virtual thrill tour through space! We even went to Neptune – VERY COLD!

As part of our Spaceport visit, we were able to see what it was like to be an astronaut. We watched a very interesting video with Tim Peake, the very first British ESA astronaut, who talked about his time in space and the different parts of the space station. Did you know that the space station is as long as 16 London buses?

Our action packed day came to an end when we all got the chance to send our very own rockets up to infinity and beyond!

September 2016

Welcome to the Year 5B community.

In our topic this year we will be focusing on communities all around the world. We have recently started a topic based on the Maasai tribe and we will be researching all about them. Our research will help us compare and understand how their community is different to ours. The children will be given the chance to make their very own Maasai masks.
In Science we will be looking at earth and space for the first term. This will include researching about different planets in our solar system including the sun, earth and moon. We are very excited for our visit to Spaceport, Liverpool where we will be finding out lots more information about the solar system.
We will also be doing gymnastics in P.E. We will be learning about different skills such as balanceing, travelling, jumping, fluency and co-ordination.

ECO Week

This week was really special because it was Eco Week! My favourite part of this week has to of been all the planting of flowers and vegetables we did: we were allowed to do everything our self, including watering, weeding and even creating our own hanging baskets. As well as this, many people came into school talking about how to be safe. First of all, there was an extremely nice lady who talked to us about all of the canals in Wigan, next there was two people who very kindly came to play a road safety game with us. We were the counters on a humongous board game and we had to answer questions and try to be the winner. Finally, another lady came into class and talked to us about how to recycle. So to sum this week into a few words - busy yet phenomenal!

My favourite thing this term...

My favourite thing this term has been our paragraphs about The Chocolate Room from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (by Roald Dahl). Firstly, we thought of ideas about what could be in the marvellous factory, then we organised these ideas and collected them into a writing plan. After that, we wrote the piece, edited it and evaluated our own and our classmates. Finally, we reviewed it and revised it. Personally, my favourite part was when we revised it because we wrote the paragraphs up on a netbook and made it look beautiful! I also enjoyed writing the paragraphs because we let our imagination run wild and in the end our paragraphs were absolutely phenomenal. Not only that, we didn’t have any rules on what to write and how to write them either, which made them extremely creative and unique.
